Library Participates in Downtown Day of the Dead Celebration November 5

Bennett Martin Public Library will be one of several downtown locations hosting activities for Dia de los Muertos or Day of the Dead Sunday, November 5. The celebration runs from 1 to 7 p.m., with activities also offered at the State Capitol Building, Nebraska History Museum, Lincoln Children's Museum and the Nebraska Student Union.

Dia de los Muertos is a Mexican holiday meant to honor and remember the dead. One of the traditions is to create an "ofrenda," or altar depicting a deceased individual and items representing who they were. Dia de los Muertos activities at Bennett Martin are from 2 to 4 p.m. and include family story times, paper skull crafts and plaster skull decorating. Staff will also distribute and stamp Dia de los Muertos passports. Participants visiting all events will be eligible for gift basket drawings.

An ofrenda honoring two Nebraska poets, Don Welch and Nancy McCleery, is on display at the library through November 12. Visitors are invited to add names of loved ones to the display.

The events are sponsored by Nebraska Folklife Network and Nebraska State Historical Society. For more information about the Dia de los Muertos events, visit (select the "Explore" tab). For more information about Lincoln City Libraries and its services, visit
