Rock Steady Boxing Lincoln Observes April as Parkinson's Awareness Month

Rock Steady Boxing Lincoln, a program at the Air Park West Recreational Center, 3720 N.W. 46th Street, invites the public to join in recognizing April as Parkinson's Awareness Month. Rock Steady Boxing is a non-contact, boxing-inspired fitness program designed to improve the quality of life for those living with Parkinson's disease. More than 2,300 people in Lancaster County are affected by Parkinson's disease, a progressive disorder of the nervous system that affects the ability to walk, talk, balance and move.

"Parkinson's Awareness Month is an opportunity to raise awareness about the disease our fighters live with every day, and to reflect on their courageous battle," said Ryan Mohling, Coach of Rock Steady Boxing Lincoln and Air Park Recreation Center Director. "Rock Steady Boxing is about more than just one class or program. Our mission is to inspire and provide hope and a better quality of life globally for those who are fighting back against Parkinson's disease."

Rock Steady Boxing Lincoln is currently serving fighters in classes from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Two different levels of classes are available, and classes are planned and prepared to accommodate varying degrees of Parkinson's and each fighter's fitness.

The Parkinson's Disease Foundation says more than 10 million people live with the disease, and more than 60,000 Americans are diagnosed each year. Recent studies indicate that certain types of exercise may slow the progression of the chronic, incurable disease. Rock Steady serves participants at all stages of Parkinson's - from the newly diagnosed to those who have been living with the disease for decades.

Rock Steady Boxing, Inc. is a non-profit organization founded in Indianapolis in 2006. The organization currently has over 17,000 participants and over 350 affiliate locations worldwide and continues to grow by appealing to men and women ranging in age from 35 to 90. Rock Steady Boxing Affiliates are independently owned and operated.
