Public Invited to Fifth Waterfest, Public Works Day at Holmes Lake

Volunteers needed to assist with event

The City's fifth Waterfest Saturday, June 7 will include a celebration of Public Works Day. The fun, free and educational event from 5 to 8 p.m. at Holmes Lake Park includes music from The String Beans, fishing, canoeing, educational exhibits, free refreshments (while they last) and prizes.

Rock Krzycki in the Watershed Management Division of Public Works and Utilities, said Waterfest helps to make residents more aware of what they can do to reduce pollutants and keep them out of water resources. Adding Public Works Day to Waterfest helps educate the public about the many services provided by the entire department. Public Works Day will give the public an up close look at some of the Department's large equipment, such as a street sweeper, a storm sewer cleaning truck, a combination sander, a truck equipped with a remote camera to view inside pipes, and a boom truck.

Volunteers are needed to help with parking, assist with activities, distribute food and prizes and help with recycling and trash collection. All volunteers will receive lunch and an event t-shirt. Volunteers are asked to report by 4:30 p.m. The minimum age to volunteer is 12, and no one under 18 will be allowed to assist with parking.

The City's partners in Waterfest include the Lower Platte South Natural Resources District, the Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality and the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission. Other sponsors are Olsson Associates; JEO Consulting Group; Nebraska Concrete and Aggregates Association; EA Engineering, Science and Technology; Nebraska Environmental Products; the Groundwater Foundation; American Classifieds; Nebraska 811; Culligan of Lincoln; Lincoln Fire and Rescue; the American Red Cross and Pepsi-Cola of Lincoln.
