Local Haulers to Collect Shoes at Curb Next Week

"Greatest Shoe Drive on Earth" attempts world record

As part of the "Greatest Shoe Drive on Earth," local waste haulers will collect donated shoes as part of their regular pick-ups May 12 through 16. The Lincoln Solid Waste and Recycling Association encourages residents to put donated shoes in any bag and leave them on the curb on their regular service day. The bags need to be labeled "Greatest Shoe Drive on Earth." Pre-printed tags are available at the customer service counters at all Russ's Markets and can be downloaded at

The drive is an attempt to earn Lincoln a Guinness World Record for the "most shoes collected for recycling in one attempt." Waste haulers will deliver the bags of recycled shoes to EcoStores Nebraska, 530 West "P" Street, to be loaded onto the "Greatest Shoe Drive on Earth" trailer.

Shoes will be collected through May 17, when a "Big Top" celebration will be held from 9 a.m. to noon at Pinnacle Bank Arena Plaza to thank donors. The recycled shoes will be distributed to needy families and will help fight poverty both locally and around the world. Shoes also can be dropped off through May 17 at the following drop-off sites:

The project is a collaboration among Soles4Souls, an international anti-poverty organization; the Lincoln Solid Waste and Recycling Association, the Minnow Project and the City's Cleaner Greener Lincoln initiative.
