TICKETS AVAILABLE FRIDAY FOR CITY’S ABRAHAM LINCOLN BICENTENNIAL CELEBRATION

Beginning at 11 a.m. Friday, December 19, tickets will be available for “10 Score,” the City’s celebration of Abraham Lincoln’s 200th Birthday, from the Lied Center box office, 12th and “R” streets (472-4747, toll-free 800-432-3231, TDD 472-4721). Tickets will be required for three events, all beginning at 7:30 p.m. at the Lied Center:

• A concert by the Jay Ungar and Molly Mason Family Band Thursday, February 12.
• “Civil War Voices,” a new musical written by Lincoln attorney Jim Harris based on Civil War correspondence, Friday, February 13.
• A free forum Sunday February 15 with Pulitzer Prize-winning author and historian Doris Kearns Goodwin, author of “Team of Rivals: the Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln.”

Tickets for the performances February 12 and 13 are $15 for adults and $10 for children and students (those over age 18 must show student identification). Free advance tickets to the Goodwin forum will first be available only to those purchasing tickets for both Thursday’s and Friday’s events ($30 total). A limited number of the free forum tickets will be distributed though this promotion. Beginning Wednesday, January 14, the rest of the free forum tickets will be available on a first-come basis from the Lied Center.

All tickets will be for open general admission seating. The Lied box office is open from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. weekdays. It will be closed from December 24 through January 5 for UNL’s holiday break.

The City has sponsored the Abraham Lincoln Birthday Celebration since 2001, but the one-day event has been expanded for the Bicentennial. 10 Score is supported by the Nebraska Humanities Council and local businesses and individuals. The February 12 concert will be Ungar and Mason’s third appearance in Lincoln. They have performed on “A Prairie Home Companion” and their own public radio specials and have worked on soundtracks for films and for Ken Burns’s documentaries. Ungar composed “Ashokan Farewell,” the theme for Burns’ “Civil War” documentary.

“Civil War Voices”has been performed at Doane College in Crete and in Alabama in preparation for the premiere of the new and expanded production for the Bicentennial. Internationally-known composer Mark Hayes of Kansas City arranged the music. A fund-raising preview reception is planned for January 13 at the Lincoln Community Playhouse.

Other 10 Score events:

• The premiere of “Looking For Lincoln,” a two-hour documentary on Lincoln’s life and legacy is set for at 7 p.m. Wednesday February 11 at the Ross Media Arts Center, 313 N. 13th St. Free tickets will be available that night on a first-come basis. The film is a collaboration of Kunhardt McGee Productions, Inkwell Films, WNET and Ark Media and is presented by PBS and NET.
• The annual Family Day is set for the afternoon of Saturday, February 14 at Southwest High School The event will include music and dancing from the Smith Family Band, which has performed for six previous celebrations. Also returning is local favorite Chris Sayre, who has performed at every previous celebrations. Michael Krebs and Debra Ann Miller will return as the President and Mary Todd Lincoln. The event also will include Civil War re-enactors, historical exhibits, children’s activities and the annual Lincoln impersonators contest.
• Free movies about Abraham Lincoln will be offered at 1:30 p.m. Sundays from January 18 through March 1 at the Museum of Nebraska History, 15th and “P” streets. From February 3 through 28, the museum also will feature “African-American Portraits, 1912-1925” and an Abraham Lincoln exhibit including a life mask and ambrotypes (images created through the ambrotype photographic process).
• A free unveiling of the new Lincoln postage stamps is tentatively set for February 12 at the State Capitol Rotunda. The Lincoln Stamp Club will have displays at the Family Day event February 14 and the Goodwin forum February 15. The club’s “LINPEX” show February 21 and 22 also will feature an Abraham Lincoln theme. The show is free at the University Place Inn, 5250 Cornhusker Highway.
• The Sheldon Museum of Art will feature “New Acquisitions: African-American Masters Collection” through March 2.
• Memorabilia from the Union’s Civil War Balloon Corps, commanded by Professor Thaddeus Lowe, will be exhibited by Terry Lowe at three events: the February 12 and 13 performances at the Lied Center and the February 14 Family Day at Southwest High. Thaddeus Lowe was the brother of Terry Lowe’s great-great-grandfather.
