Lincoln Mayor Coleen J. Seng and the City Parks and Recreation Department will award grants from the Community Action Program (formerly called the Self-Help Program) to 15 neighborhood associations and community organizations February 10. The presentations will be made during the Mayor’s Neighborhood Roundtable meeting, which begins at 4:30 p.m. in Room 113 at the County City Building.

“This grants program continues to play a major role in improving our parks system,” said Mayor Seng. “I want to thank the volunteers who are willing to invest their time in these neighborhood projects.” Parks and Recreation Director Lynn Johnson said more than $55,000 in project requests were submitted for the $45,000 available through the Community Action Program.

The Community Action Program is funded through City general tax revenues and is approved by the City Council each year as part of the City budget process. The program typically provides funding for equipment and materials, and volunteers provide labor. Projects must be constructed on publicly owned property or involve programs available to the general public. The criteria for choosing which projects are funded include locations, neighborhood support for the project and consistency with park plans.

The following groups will receive Community Action Program funding for 2005:

• Clinton Neighborhood Association, Woodside Playground and Lintel Park - accessibility improvements, EZ digger, drought-tolerant plants.
• Country Club Neighborhood Association, Country Club Islands - partial funding for irrigation.
• Country View Neighborhood Association, Country View Park - park development.
• East Campus Community Organization, McAdams Park - pathway, drinking fountain.
• Edenton South Homeowners Association, Edenton South Park - eight trees.
• Far South Homeowners Association, Densmore Park - half basketball court.
• Friends of the Dog Parks, Rickmans Run and Oak Creek Run - benches.
• Irvingdale Neighborhood Association, Rudge Memorial Park - park renovation.
• Lincoln Flying Disc Club, Tierra Park - six concrete tee pads.
• Lincoln Horseshoe Club, University Place Park - bench.
• Sheridan Boulevard Tree Project, Sheridan Boulevard Islands - three trees.
• South Salt Creek Community Organization, Cooper Park - two benches, trash receptacle.
• West “A” Neighborhood Association, Coddington Park - two picnic tables, trash receptacle.
• Woods Park Neighborhood Association, Woods Park - tire swing.
