On July 19, 2022, at approx. 2324 hrs, deputies were detailed to Branched Oak Lake, area 11, 10001 W. Davey Road, near the marina on a report of gunshots and someone yelling for help. Upon arrival, deputies contacted several people who indicated a man had been shot. Life saving measures were taken by several agencies, including Lincoln Fire and Rescue, Raymond Fire and Rescue and Star Care. The victim, 42 year old Benjamin Case was pronounced dead after those attempts failed.
The investigation revealed 5 people were socializing on Case's Bayliner cuddy cabin boat, moored at the marina. An unknown male came onto the boat, when Case opened the door of the cabin to investigate who was on board, he was shot. The suspect fled the area in an unknown vehicle. The joint LSO-LPD Crime Scene processed the scene. interviews are being conducted with the other people who were on the boat and video camera footage is being examined to gather more information. Officers from the Nebraska Game and Parks and State Patrol assisted at the scene. An autopsy has been scheduled by the Lancaster County Attorney's Office to determine the cause of death.
Area 11 was closed during the scene investigation, but has reopened.
