In late February, I was made aware an LSO Sergeant made contact with two people who had outstanding arrest warrants for failure to pay fines and costs. The Sergeant released both people without arresting either one, instead, instructing them to show up and pay their fines, a potential violation of Nebraska Revised Statutes 28-924, Neglecting to Serve a Warrant. Because of the potential a crime had occurred, the Lincoln Police Department was asked to conduct the investigation.
On Wednesday, Sgt. Ryan Schmuecker was cited by LPD for Neglecting to serve a Warrant and Official Misconduct. At that same time, I launched an Internal Investigation into the matter. Schmuecker has been placed on Administrative Leave.
Sgt. Schmuecker is a 19-year veteran of the Sheriff’s Office and has served in a number of positions. He is currently a shift supervisor in the Patrol Division.
